ImagePopular Music And The Underground by Chuck Mancuso
Kendall/Hunt Publishing • Dubuque, Iowa 1996.

In the mid-'70s, there was a messy war of words in the letters section of Down Beat between Southern fiddler Charlie Daniels and bandleader Stan Kenton over what constituted legitimate music. The dispute was reminiscent of the fuss that was raised when Ray Charles covered Don Gibson's "I Can't Stop Loving You" in 1962, or when Sam Cooke hooked up with producers Hugo and Luigi to score some pop hits. The irony in all these skirmishes is that jazz, country and pop music share more than most devotees of one form or another would like to admit.
